Restylane is a hyaluronic acid gel that is injected into deep natural folds and wrinkles in the skin, to give patients a smoother and more youthful appearance. It can also be used for lip augmentation in patients desiring fuller looking lips.
What exactly is Restylane?
Restylane is a transparent acid gel that can be injected directly into the facial tissues. It is not sourced from animals, but rather produced using a natural fermentation process. This means that the risk of allergic reaction and disease transfer is significantly reduced.
When Restylane is injected into the dermal tissue, it integrates into the tissues beneath the skin and attaches to water molecules. This is what allows the tissues to maintain volume. After a certain period of time, your body metabolizes the filler and naturally eliminates without any damage or residue left behind.
Which Areas Can be Treated Using Restylane?
The results of Restylane are immediate. Commonly treated areas include:
- Laugh lines
- Corners of the mouth
- Deep frown lines on the forehead
- Under eye areas and crow’s feet
- Marionette lines (also known as jowls)
How Long Does Restylane Last For?
On average, you can expect the average Restalyne treatment to last between 6-9 months, however, longevity depends on a variety of factors such as:
- The skill and experience of the practitioner
- Skin type
- Lifestyle choices
- Metabolic rate
The area of injection will substantially affect how long the results of Restylane last. If the injection site is an area with frequent muscle movement, the effects are unlikely to last as long.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Side effects following Restylane treatment are rare, but can include swelling, pain and some bruising although this should pass after a few days.
